Recycling paper better

Here’s a complete guide to Common Paper Grades. Our definitions are either the same as, or largely derived from, the ISRI Scrap Specifications Circular published by the Institute of Scrap Metal Recycling Industries Inc.

#1 Kraft (Used Brown Kraft)

Consists of baled brown kraft bags free of objectionable liners and original contents.

Prohibitive materials are not permitted.
Total outthrows may not exceed 1/2 of 1%.

New Double-Lined Kraft Corrugated Cuttings
Dark Medium

Consists of baled corrugated cuttings having liners of either kraft, jute or test liner; medium will be dark colored. Non-soluble adhesives, butt rolls, slabbed or hogged medium, and treated medium or liners are not acceptable in this grade.

Prohibitive materials are not permitted.

Total Outthrows may not exceed 2%.

New Double-Lined Kraft Corrugated Cuttings -No Dark Medium Light Wax

Consists of baled corrugated cuttings having test liners. Non-soluble adhesives, butt rolls, slabbed, hogged medium, dark mediums, and treated medium or liners are not acceptable in this grade.

Prohibitive materials are not permitted.

Total Outthrows may not exceed 2%.

Kraft Grocery Bags with Handles
KGB

Consists of baled, new brown kraft bag cuttings, sheets, and misprinted bags.

Contains handles with glue attached.

Prohibitive materials are not permitted. Total outthrows may not exceed 1%.

Kraft Multy-Wall Bag Waste
KMW

Consists of new brown kraft multi-wall bag cuttings, sheets, and misprint bags, free of stitched papers.

Prohibitive materials are not permitted.

Total outthrows may not exceed 1%.

Select Old Corrugated Containers

Consists of baled, double-sorted corrugated containers, generated from supermarkets and/or industrial or commercial facilities, having liners or test liner, jute, or kraft. Material has been specially sorted to be free of boxboard, off-shore corrugated, plastic, and wax.

Prohibitive materials may not exceed 1/2 of 1%.

Total outthrows may not exceed 2%.

OMG Magazines (Ctd GW w/HM)

Consists of coated magazines, catalogues, and similar printed materials. May contain a small percentage of uncoated news-type paper.

Prohibitive materials may not exceed 1%.

Total outthrows may not exceed 3%.

OP #1 Office Pack #1

Consists of printed or unprinted sheets, shavings, and cuttings of colored or white sulphite or sulphate ledger, bond, writing, and other papers wich have similar fiber and filler content. Contains less than 10% color. This grade must be free of treated coated, padded or heavily printed stock. A percentage of carbonless paper and groundwood is allowable. 

Prohibitive materials may not exceed 1/2 of 1%. 

Total outthrows may not exceed 2%.
OP #1 Office Pack #1

Unprinted Bleached Sulfate Kraft

Consists of unprinted bleached sulphate cuttings, free from misprint sheets, printed cartons, wax, greaseproof lamination, gilt, and inks, adhesives or coatings that are non-soluble.

Prohibitive materials are not permitted.

Total outthrows may not exceed 2%.
Unprinted Bleached Sulfate Kraft

Coated White Blank

Consists of unprinted cuttings or sheets of white coated groundwood content apper..

Prohibitive materials are not permitted.

Total outthrows may not exceed 1%.

Old Newspaper

ONP #6 is less clean and more likely to contain contamination than ONP #7-8.

Prohibitive materials may not exceed: 1%.

Total outthrows may not exceed: 5%.
Old Newspaper

Old Newspaper De-Ink Quality

Consists of sorted, fresh newspapers, not sunburned, containing not more than the normal percentage of colored sections. May contain magazines. 

Prohibitive materials may not exceed: 1%.

Total outthrows: 2%.

New Double-Lined Kraft Corrugated Cuttings
No Dark Medium White Over 20%

Consists of sorted, fresh newspapers, not sunburned, containing not more than the normal percentage of colored sections. 

Prohibitive Materials: 1/2 of 1%.

Total outthrows may not exceed: 2%.

ONP#9 Old Newspaper Over-Issue (OI or OIN)

Consists of unused, overrun newspapers printed on newsprint, containing not more than the normal percentage of colored sections.

Prohibitive materials: None permitted.

Total outthrows: None permitted.

White Blank News Pancakes

Consists of palletized newsprint rolls ranging in width from 1/2" to 10".

Prohibitive materials are not permitted.

Total outthrows may not exceed 1%.
